In my day to day life, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a sucker for all things convenient and quick.
Especially when getting ready for work or school early in the mornings, I always gravitate towards makeup that will minimize the amount of spent time, without having to sacrifice a full and put together face of makeup.
One of my favorite time-saving techniques is to use stick foundations in place of traditional liquid. That being said, most Foundation Sticks that are highly rated have about half the amount of normal foundations, and are even more expensive. I feel like I’ve been on a perpetual hunt for an affordable foundation stick that can truly compete with the options sold at Sephora.
Today, I’m going to be sharing with you my thoughts on the $10 NYX Mineral Foundation Stick- so if you’re wondering how it holds up, just keep on reading.
As always with foundation reviews, I’m going to give you a quick rundown on my skin tone, type and texture so that you can use that knowledge to make an educated assumption of whether or not this product would be a good fit for you. So here we go:
- Very Pale (I almost always purchase the fairest foundation shade in a collection)
- Extremely dry in the Winter, but combination in the Summer
- If I ever get oily, it is around my nose
- Hyperpigmentation from previous acne scars
- Occasional pimples, usually on the chin area
Also as always, I am now going to list the product claims so we can see how well it really stacks up
- Portable and Buildable
- The luxurious formula is easy to apply and extremely blendable, which allows for flawless highlighting and contouring
- You can also use this versatile foundation on the entire face or in isolated areas that need a little extra attention
Not many claims to go off of, but now that we’ve got all our bases covered in terms of claims, let’s get into the product itself.
Starting off with the shade range, I want to give a huge shout out to NYX for having 15 awesome options available. Not only is it hard to find stick foundations with that kind of range (seeing as how drugstore stick foundations usually offer only ~4 colors) but it is impressive for any drugstore or highend shade range. The colors range from Fair to Cocoa, and do generally seem to cover fair to deep skintones relatively well. Of course, as with most foundations, the majority of the shades available are focused on medium to tan skintones.
If you read my blog regularly, you’ll know that I’m pretty much as fair as can be, and am 99.9% of the time the fairest shade in all foundation collections. However, I think with this range in particular there was a bit of a mix-up in terms of placing the shades. While the shade ‘Fair’ is listed as the lightest option, I personally found the shade up ‘Porcelain’ to be more suitable. Fair was very pink and I detected a bit of an orange tinge when swatched on my hand, while Porcelain looked about .5 shade lighter with more of a yellow undertone. Because of this, I would recommend swatching these foundations in-store so that you can find your perfect match. As for the shade porcelain, it’s definitely not the fairest foundation I own, and is probably an exact shade match for me, or maybe even .5-1 shade too dark. Either way, when I finish my makeup and apply concealer, it works just fine.
In terms of application, I of course love the ease of the stick format, and love using this foundation for travel purposes, as I know it won’t spill or break in my makeup bag. This is also a great option for on-plane touchups, as it doesn’t qualify as a liquid and you can take it on your carry-on without any worries.
When applied to the skin, which I do straight from the bullet, this foundation doesn’t tug or drag like so many other stick foundations do. Instead it is very creamy in texture and glides across imperfections with complete ease. I personally prefer blending this out with a brush, but with this formula in particular, I actually feel that a sponge works just fine. While most stick foundations are actually quite dry in consistency and often require a brush rather than a sponge, I find that either method of application is suitable for the NYX Mineral Foundation Stick as it is very emollient in texture.
As for coverage, I would consider this light to buildable. With that being said, my absolute favorite thing about this foundation is the finish. This LITERALLY looks like nothing on the skin. Somehow it just melds perfectly with skin and gives a finish that is not matte nor dewy, but a perfect replica of your natural skin. This is my favorite thing about this foundation because it adds to the wonderful convenience of the product. Not only is it easy to travel with and quick to use, but it requires very little effort on your part to look flawless and natural. With this coverage you can wear this foundation alone and it will just boost the natural radiance of your skin, or it can be built up for a more flawless and made up look.
As for the wear time, I was actually quite impressed. Most other stick foundations that I’ve used tend to break up and separate around my nose and chin around hour 6. This foundation didn’t break up or start cracking- though I will admit that I wouldn’t necessarily consider this long wearing as it does get quite dewy over extended periods of time. Though it does have a natural finish, because it can get a tad bit (but not excessively) shiny towards the end of the day, I would recommend carrying blotting sheets in your bag just in case.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this foundation. Is it my all time favorite, new holy grail? No. But it is a great option for quick and convenient makeup, touchups, or just something to throw on as you rush out the door. My favorite part of this foundation is definitely the natural finish, and buildability in terms of coverage.
So there you have it! Of course, foundation works differently for everybody, but for me I really liked this option and would recommend it for anybody who is looking for an easy makeup option.
