Save the Strands: My Affordable Winter Haircare Routine

Ahh winter. A time filled with snow, ice, and everything nice. Well, everything nice except for our hair.

I don’t know about you guys, but the colder months absolutely wreak havoc on my hair, and it has taken a whoooole lot of trial and error to discover the perfect routine to avoid stringy strands.

Today I’m going to be sharing with you my (affordable!) Winter haircare routine, and how I keep my hair perfectly sleek despite the blistering cold. Hope you enjoy!

First up is shampoo and conditioner. I will preface this by saying that if you want your hair to be as healthy as possible during the winter months, you should NOT wash your hair everyday. I know it’s nice to feel squeaky clean, but stripping your scalp’s natural oils with shampoo will turn your hair into a brittle mess. Personally, I wash my hair every other day in order to avoid excessive dryness and excessive oil. And when I do choose to give my hair a wash, I always go back to my trusty Dove Damage Solutions Hair Therapy. This line of shampoo and conditioners has done absolute wonders for adding moisture to my dry hair, and holding my split ends at bay.

The next product I am going to mention is what I use for “special occasions” (aka for when my hair is an absolute mess). The Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist is a deep conditioner that works to add nourishment and gloss to dry and damaged hair with it’s ingredients of Australian Aloe, Jojoba, and Sea Kelp. I personally use this about 2 times a week to give my hair that extra boost of shine. To use this product, I work it into clean, wet hair and let it sit for about 3 minutes (sometimes I go longer!). Then simply rinse, dry, and stare at yourself in the reflection of your hair.

After hopping out of the shower I choose to tie my hair up in a Turbo Twist Towel, and let my hair air dry. This lessens the risk of heat damage.

Once my hair is lightly damp, I move onto the next stage of my haircare routine…

Because my hair would be one giant knot if I didn’t brush it out when wet, I needed to find a great spray to make combing through a breeze. My favorite product at the moment is the Infusium 23 Leave in Treatment. After taking my hair out of its towel, I spray this product all over my head (and am very generous), then simply brush through in gentle strokes until my hair is perfectly combed and straight.

As soon as my hair is brushed out and knot free, I use the John Frieda Frizz Ease Straight Fixation Styling Creme to keep it that way. This smooth-on cream keeps my straight hair looking shiny and sleek, without adding that feeling of product buildup. This Smoothing Creme helps to block out humidity and noticeably moisturizes each strand of hair. To use this I simply place a nickel sized amount in my palms and work it through my damp hair. This is truly a dream at keeping your hair sleek all day.

The last step in my winter hair care routine is dry oil. My personal favorite is the L’Oreal Advanced Haircare Total Repair Multi Restorative Dry Oil. This is a lightweight daily leave in treatment that works to add shine from root to tip. This dry oil instantly tames my flyaways and leaves a lasting shine. I simply spray this all over my hair (focused at the tips) and run my hands through my hair to evenly distribute the product.

And there you have it! This routine has literally saved my hair during the cold months, and I couldn’t be happier with the results!

Let me know what you guys love to use for your hair in the winter! I’d love to hear 🙂

Have a great day everyone!
